Chapter Thirteen

On the way to Mr. Newton’s house, I elect Dad to do most of the talking. People open up to him. Trust him. Unlike me. I actually debate sitting in the car until Dad convinces Mr. Newton to speak with me, but that might be a tad childish. I don’t need my daddy to fight my battles for me. I just need him to get me inside that house.

We walk up to the front door, Dad in the lead with Mitchell and me behind him. He rings the bell.

Miles answers the door, and when his eyes land on me, the color seems to drain from his face.

“Mr. Newton, I presume,” Dad says, extending his hand. “I’m Thomas Ashwell. I work with my daughter, Piper, at her P.I. agency in town. I’m aware you’ve already met both Piper and Detective Brennan.”

“I have, and I spoke with that other officer yesterday. He said she wanted something of Simone’s.”

I cringe when he refers to me as “she” instead of by name, which my dad just mentioned twice in the past thirty seconds.

“I’m not interested in having a psychic try to locate my daughter. I’ve been through enough already.”

Dad nods and laces his hands in front of him. “I’m sure you have been. I’ve had to endure watching Piper go through some really awful things working on cases like this, and I’ll tell you it doesn’t get any easier. She puts herself in danger to find missing people and to bring criminals to justice. As a father, it’s heartbreaking to see. I can’t even imagine what you must be feeling. But father to father, I wouldn’t be here right now if I wasn’t convinced Piper could find Simone for you.”

Man, after telling me giving someone false hope was worse than anything else in cases like this, Dad just basically promised Mr. Newton that I’d find his daughter. No pressure or anything.

“You have my word that we won’t take up any more of your time than is absolutely necessary,” Dad adds.

“It’s not that.” Mr. Newton looks down at his feet. “It’s that I don’t believe in things like psychics.”

“You don’t have to,” I say, stepping around Dad to face Mr. Newton. “All I need you to do is let me inside and direct me to Simone’s room. You don’t even have to watch me do my thing.” I’d prefer if he didn’t. “And I promise that once I leave here today, you’ll never have to see me again if you don’t want to. All I want to do is reunite you with your daughter, no matter what that might mean now.”

He raises his head to meet my gaze. “You think she’s dead, don’t you?”

God, how am I supposed to answer that? “What I think is that you deserve closure and the man that harmed your daughter should be brought to justice.”

Mr. Newton wipes a tear that falls from his right eye. “Two years ago. That’s when I lost hope of ever finding my Simone alive.
